Francis E. Monroe - Original Buffalo Soldier
On a cold winter day, 4 soldiers mounted their iron stallions, well three stallions and an Arabian, and took off down the coast for what would prove to be a living history lesson. As we sat in a local diner, (I had the waffles) Mr. Monroe proceeded to tell us of his adventures as a young man from New York going into the 10th Calvary. While FCC rules prohibit me from using the language he uttered upon seeing and dealing with a horse for the first time, just think of what you would say if you suddenly met Bigfoot. In his military career, he was present at most of the moments in time I, as historian, have only read about. It is hard to put into words the feeling of sitting across the table from a man who actually lived it. We spent several hours visiting with Mr. Monroe. While talking he asked if I could try and locate and old MP buddy of his he hadn't seen in 50 years. He didn't know whether he was even alive. Turns out he is and is the father of a friend of the wife of one of our members! Small world. We put them in contact with one another. I don't know if they broke out the horses or old Harleys they rode as MPs but can you imagine the stories they had for one another? Enjoy some of the photos and articles he shared with us.
